Denver criminal defense attorney Alaurice Tafoya-Modi obtained her B.A. in 1990 from the University of Colorado. She obtained her law degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1993 and began honing her skills as a trial lawyer while she worked as a Deputy State Public Defender in the Denver Colorado State Public Defender’s office. After six and a half years of handling numerous types of criminal cases including serious felony cases and numerous murder trials, Mrs. Tafoya-Modi left the Colorado State Public Defender’s office to work for the firm of Buchanan, Jurdem and Zulauf where she continued representing those criminally charged as well as personal injury clients. She began her own firm in 2000, specializing in Denver criminal defense and Denver personal injury litigation. She is a talented and experienced litigator who has tried numerous cases in her career and handled cases all over the state of Colorado as well as in federal courts.

As a Denver criminal defense lawyer, her commitment to her clients and persistence in advocating their cases have earned her respect from prosecutors, opposing counsel, and judges. In addition, Mrs. Tafoya-Modi has experience dealing with high profile cases that have garnered media attention which can bring with it challenging dimensions.

After being appointed to serve on the Colorado Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice by Governor Bill Ritter, Alaurice Tafoya-Modi was recently re-appointed by Governor John Hickenlooper, and will continue to serve on the Commission. The work of the commission focuses on evidence-based recidivism reduction initiatives and the cost-effective expenditure of limited criminal justice funds. The commission makes annual reports of findings and recommendations, including evidence-based analysis and data for the consideration of Colorado’s Governor and Legislature.

Mrs. Tafoya-Modi is a member of the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar, the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association, the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association and the National Hispanic Bar Association. Mrs. Tafoya-Modi lives in Denver, Colorado with her husband and two daughters. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling and being active in the great outdoors.
